Category 5e UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) is the most commonly used cable for use between the Server Cabinet and the Desktop in small office environments, and in larger installations, used between the Patch Bay and the User Outlets.
Category 5e Cable can be used up to a maximum of 90m from Switch or Patch Bay to Outlet and can be used for:
- Fast Ethernet (100mbps)
- Fast Ethernet (100mbps) + Power over Ethernet (PoE)
- Gigabit Ethernet (1000mbps)
Other types of Category 5e Cables include: Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) – used in circumstances where the cables are likely to come into contact with interference, eg (EMI) Electromagnetic Interference and (RFI) Radio Frequency Interference. Usually found near fluorescent fittings, dimmer switches, motors etc.
